This past weekend I met up with Anna in LA, continuing what has become one of my most treasured traditions—seeing Jenny Lewis together. It's always transcendent to reunite with Anna, who I've known since we were babies. It's rare to know someone so deeply—I feel like I get to be all of my old selves at once. However, this also means that I revert to a teenage borrowing monster, coveting everything she owns. I also packed unusually poorly for this trip, which is to say that I went with a purely vibes-based approach without trying things on together or considering the occasions I'd be dressing for.
The show was on Friday night, and I immediately hated everything in my suitcase. So I borrowed a green tank top (belonging to Anna’s twin Kelsey, by way of Anna) that seems to be sold out everywhere online, and wore it with these contrast-stitch pants (rented from RTR & Ashley Park collaboration, lol), green Hansel from Basel socks (mostly covered by the pants, but I’m a completionist), a thrifted oversized denim chore coat, and white Nike Blazers with a navy stripe (the only sneaker silhouette I reliably like on myself.)
The next day was a friend's party—despite being from Florida, I don't know how to dress for a warm weather holiday party, and panicked again. We spent a couple hours at a vintage show during the day (worth the paid entry), and with those purchases and multiple borrowed items, I made it work. The green pants (yes, again), a jewel green popcorn shirt from the vintage show, Anna's Stickybaby satin bomber jacket, Hansel from Basel bright red socks, and Kelsey's Marni sandals.
What I Bought On This Trip
-Black and red silk floral shirt I felt compelled to buy in my vintage show blackout and may end up re-selling.
-A pair of blue-grey wool/angora trousers that fit perfectly and are only the tiniest bit itchy (again, caught up in the moment.)
-Black velvet vest. Will have to figure out how to style this, but still happy I got it. Suggestions for how to wear this without looking like a pirate are welcome.
-The aforementioned green stretchy popcorn/bubble tops (if you know the proper word for this, please tell me.) Exploring Poshmark now, I see that I've overpaid... but again—I was on a deadline.
-Anna and I stopped into the Ganni store right before I left for the airport and I limited myself to the sale rack, where I was drawn to this vest. I’ve been looking for a sweater vest ever since renting this one, which I love the fit of but just couldn't fully commit to because—well, look at it and tell me which element you think gave me pause.
What I Bought *Because* of this Trip
-Inspired by Anna's bomber jacket, I found two options for my picky, polyester-averse self. The first one is an Eileen Fisher collarless quilted jacket made from linen and silk (deluxe!), acquired on Poshmark. Here’s the same one for sale on eBay.
-The second one is an Alexander Wang silk bomber also lined in silk (yes, I’m that picky) from eBay. Seems like there are a fair amount of these available secondhand right now.
-A blue popcorn/bubble shirt from Poshmark. I guess this is going to be my 'look' this season. But it was under $10! Plenty of these available secondhand.
What I'm Wearing
-Casual and frequent fur coat usage after blandly puffering my way through the below-40s for too long. Perfect for nights out when you end up keeping the coat on the entire time. Mine is fake and thrifted, but I just sold a similar one to Beacon’s Closet in Park Slope if you’re in the market for one.
-this grey and green Sandro sweater, rented
-My new Ganni vest with a black turtleneck and the rented green pants (sounds like too much... but it's just enough.)
What I'm Coveting
-Anna's Ganni cowboy boots. I was hoping to find a pair at the vintage show but unfortunately I also now know that these fit exactly the way I want them to. I’m watching a pair on The RealReal right now and hoping the price drops even more.
-These Nancy Stella Soto pants that Anna bought on our way out of the vintage market, at a different market (it was a magical day.)
-A red leather blazer. The heart wants what it wants!
-Silk track pants. Black, with a stripe down the side. See above, re: the heart.
-I just bought an everyday brown leather Coach bag from Etsy, but a recent misplacing (hopefully temporary!) of a boxy blue leather going-out bag has left me searching for other options for dressier occasions (i.e., times when you don't need to fit a book into your bag.)
If you’ve gotten this far, I’m assuming we know each other from our Tumblr days <3 hi, and thanks for indulging me.
Now—send me your requests! I love nothing more than a secondhand quest.
