Isn't it funny how losing things makes you obsess over them so much more? I just lost my sunglasses recently and immediately found a new pair online. When they arrived I felt sad that they weren't MINE. I wondered if it was a sign from the universe to move on that I just completely missed. It feels silly that clothes can cause me so much emotional turmoil, but they do, sue me lol. A beautiful story from you as always! Also, Mckibbin lofts 😭😭😭

I feel the same way about a couple of pieces of clothing I’ve lost (or in one case, had stolen) along the way. I miss them the way I miss pieces of myself that I’ve shed or left behind throughout the years.

You looked so great in this dress! I've totally felt the same way about a few seminal wardrobe pieces from years ago. I was tempted to re-buy a pair of tall boots that I wore all through college when I saw a very similar style recently for 70% off. But like you say, it's often about trying to revisit/rebottle that moment of who we were than the thing itself. Our closets tell so many stories. Have you read/watched the Emily Spivack 'Worn Stories' book and documentary series?

I loved that book but I don’t think I knew there was an accompanying doc!

This reminds me of a dress my mom bought me when I was a teen, it was also paisley in this muted, soft pink. I remember trying it on and falling in love with it. The brand was American Rag. Now I wonder if I could find it, and if I’d still love it today?

It is weird to think about the clothes we've lost. Over a decade ago I took a grey, button down, knee-length dress with pleats (it sounds like a lot but I swear it was cute) to the dry cleaner, only to return for pick up and it had been mysteriously lost. She said I never brought it in, I swear a I did. But I still think about that dress and all the outfits I missed out on.

Love this. Anyone else regret garments they not lost but sold/donated in a hasty clean out? A certain 100% silk gold babydoll minidress with a raw hem from an east village vintage store c. 2011 haunts me—why would I give that away (and where did I even give it…)? Slower buying with age also means more thoughtful culling, thankfully.

Love that you could find a picture of your missing dress though! That’s special.

I wore a pair of dolce vita boots from 2010s into the ground, and I miss them! They would be completely impractical for pdx weather now, but I do love seeing myself in them in old pictures. :')

This reminds me of a skirt I used to wear the summer after college. I had a job waiting tables and working at the local newspaper and yet I never had any money. So I had this cute floral skirt, a pair of sandals, a pair of sneakers for work, three t-shirts, two dresses, and a pair of shorts I worked in. I had NO summer clothes except these things. It was the ultimate capsule closet before that term even became a thing. That skirt, I remember to this day. I loved how I looked and felt in it. That skirt and that summer were one. Good memory.
