Wow this was so thorough and genuine, truly appreciate this review!!! So funny how the “this isn’t my money, might as well get weird with it!” thing is REAL and you can identify it when you look at your choices the first month. We sometimes joke pro bono hours are “monopoly money” at my job, similar concept. Even when a reviewer is being as honest as possible, I think that feeling can creep into a lot of reviews for gifted items - eg I love this FREE, but would I actually spend full price on it? Basically what Elle Dresses Well said in a note last week, no idea how to link it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ anyhow, thank you for fighting that and giving such a thorough, clear review!!

I was thinking about Elle’s comment when I wrote that! It’s very weird. Love the concept of pro bono as “monopoly money” 😂

Thanks for this great in-depth review! I’ve been using Nuuly for years and have been curious about RTR. The feature I love most about Nuuly is the “pause”-I usually end up renting 4-6 times a year and I love that it’s so easy to just skip a few months. It’s for budget reasons and style reasons- I get a lot more use out of it in the winter. I’m in my mid 40s and the warm weather styles at Nuuly tend to skew too young for me, but I LOVE renting fun coats in the winter.

You’re so right about the pause! You can also pause rent the runway but it does cost money, and it’s free on Nuuly, right?

Loved when you wrote about RTR a few months back and so naturally I was very invested in this Nuuly experience. What a thoughtful review! Also, aren’t those Luna jeans the best…

I’m on my third Nuuly shipment and ran into the same issues you did. Loved maybe 1-2 things but the rest of the items stayed in the Nuuly bag waiting to be returned. Have never tried RTR but thinking that might be a better fit for me. Also…lots of very overly trendy items on Nuuly that I’m not sure I love.

I've been curious about both. This is a great comparison between the two!

This is such a useful comparison! I wonder if Nuuly is why so much of FP is sold out all the time!

Thank you for this service journalism!! I’m a RTR subscriber who has been Nuuly-curious, but agree that having to send everything back is a dealbreaker.

FYI on your point about cost, RTR does have an option for one shipment a month (it’s what I do), $95 for 5 items. It actually used to be four items but they increased it maybe a year ago, I’d guess to be more competitive with Nuuly. The plan descriptions claim you don’t get access to the most expensive stuff with the one-shipment plan, but I’ve never had a problem finding lots of good stuff anyway!

Thank you for this!! I went to my subscription page to check this out for the post, which is why I missed that - when I went back just now, it still didn’t give me the option to downgrade to 1 shipment a month, which feels shady (or just poorly designed) - will edit shortly to credit you!

SO I recently went from the 2-shipment to a 1-shipment RTR subscription, but I had to email them to do it — I think it is intentional because my subscription page was the same as yours, Eleanor! For what it’s worth RTR customer service is always super responsive and helpful but it is a sneaky design.
