Despite the fact that I’ve now done almost 20 (!) of these weekly roundups, I get a little insecure each time I schedule one. They’re not a true daily record of my outfits—there are days when I barely leave the house, or don’t want to ‘waste’ a good pair of pants on a day of solely chest-up interactions. And I still sometimes feel weird about how frequently I repeat the same garments or outfits, that maybe I’m wearing the same things too often, or that I don’t have enough variety.
But one reason I love this series is the accountability to myself that it creates—I feel so much better when I get up, get outside, and get dressed in the morning. I don’t feel great when I don’t change out of the shirt I slept in the night before. Compiling these posts reminds me that I’m happier when I take at least a little time to pick out an outfit rather than letting the day slide away without doing so.
Another reason I love this series is because I identify with the people who say they don’t have something to take a pic of every day. Me neither! These are not revolutionary outfits! But I think it’s affirming to see simple outfits, or people who rewear something multiple times in a week, and I hope it feels that way to look at my week in outfits posts.
And finally, these are my favorite kind of posts to see from other people—your ‘week in the life’ posts, your ‘what I wore this week’ series, your messy bedrooms, your pets in the background, where you wore what you wore and why you did or didn’t like it. I’m happy whenever I see
share another week of her outfits based on her weekly prompts, I’m always inspired by the outfit posts in the chat… if I follow you, know that I’ve appreciated each one of your outfit selfies! So if these posts help you motivate yourself to get dressed in the morning or give you permission to just keep washing and wearing the same shirt every day for a week… that’s what I hope I’m here for.
Wearing my coveted Lee Mathews shirt via the RealReal (similar Lee Mathews floral blouse here and contrast stitch blouse here), rented Agolde jeans (exact pair secondhand here), black Melissa sandals (secondhand here), Who? Weekly cap (here), library books (free, via Brooklyn Public Library). Took this photo on my way out the door to return these books. Most likely Dead Weight by Eliza Barry Callahan (finished, loved) and A Furious Sky by Eric Jay Dolin, which I didn’t finish in time but think I just need to own a copy of for reference (for the book I am slowly starting to work on!). Just a day of work and errands.
Went to the NYU library to do some writing—devastated to announce that only a month after discovering NYU now offered alumni access to the library they have now decided to “sunset” the program. Perhaps if John Sexton were not receiving an $800,000 annual retirement salary in perpetuity they would have enough money to continue this program.. just a thought. Wearing shirt I originally bought for my husband (similar here), old Agolde jeans purchased via Rent the Runway (secondhand here), Roxanne Assoulin necklace (similar Roxanne Assoulin necklace secondhand here), FL lottery hat (similar here in black and turquoise for $5 on Hoboken FB Marketplace, lol, and here in black and yellow on eBay), and tan Melissa sandals (secondhand here).
Dinner and a play in the city! Saw Frances McDormand at dinner before—I never see celebrities. She was wearing a long navy or black shirtdress and looked striking, obviously. Then went to Oh, Mary and laughed until my stomach hurt. Wearing the Lee Mathews shirt and black Melissa sandals again, black Apiece Apart pants (secondhand on Poshmark in several colors and sizes here, and on the RealReal in olive in 0/2 and off-white in a 16 and a 12), and my pearl pendant necklace (similar here).
Sewing day with a few friends from the quilt guild, organized by my friend. Wearing a different pair of Agolde jeans (multiple pairs secondhand here), a men’s polo shirt from Beacon’s Closet (the label is ‘Lord Jeff’—here’s a similar Lord Jeff polo), lotto hat, and tan Melissa sandals.
Eyelet shirt and Melissa sandals again, Madewell pants I feel weird about (similar here). Why do I feel weird about these pants? I don’t know. I can always default to them because I’m never trying to “save” them for a certain occasion. I know they fit and look fine, but the shape or silhouette just feels off to me, in a way that maybe I’ll end up liking more in a few years. They’re dependable, but I only reach for them out of desperation or lack of inspiration.
A friend of a friend wrote a show and performed a couple shows in the city before taking it to the Edinburgh Fringe Fest (Pretty Good Not Bad). I went to see it with her best friend Haley. It was stunning—highly recommend if you happen to be at the Fringe Fest (jealous!) Wearing a brown linen Talbots top that I thrifted the last time I was in Florida (similar here in olive green and here in off-white), Apiece Apart pants and black Melissa sandals again.
Work and a field trip to Moma PS 1 with my friend Kara to see the Pacita Abad exhibit. Wearing a Sea New York shirt via the RealReal (same one secondhand here, and in different colorways here and here… really struggling to resist buying that last one!), Ashley Park x Rent the Runway pants (similar here), Eric Javits bag via Poshmark (exact one here secondhand), tan Melissa sandals, and Queens County Farm baseball cap.
Rewearing the Sea New York shirt for some work and errands, along with my necklaces, Who? Weekly baseball cap, Melissa sandals, and a black By Malene Birger tank top (similar here). I love these pants so much, and I’ve never seen anything quite like them. They’re vintage Esprit from Beacon’s Closet several years ago. I had a hard time finding anything similar online (secondhand or new)—this is the best I could do right now.
Wore this to dinner with Haley at a Korean restaurant in Greenpoint. This is a new (still had tags on!) Tory Burch find from the RealReal and I am very happy with it! Falls into the “structured top” category, could be over-the-top feminine but somehow doesn’t feel that way and pairs well with more casual/’masculine’ pants. Here’s a similar top from Doen, secondhand here. Also wearing Needles pants (secondhand here and here) and Holzweiler suede sandals (similar vibe in leather here).
If you missed the previous installments of weekly outfit posts, you can find them here!
I love the consistency of your collared shirt + barrel leg pants + strappy sandals combination. Totally agree that it's affirming to see repeated elements in people's outfit posts!
Love your weekly outfit posts!! You + midimalist chat are what gave me the courage to include an outfit pic in my first newsletter!! Going to try and make a habit of it even though it feels so intimidating for some reason. Also feel free to ignore if this is your fashion safe space with no work/book discussion but I would love to hear more abt your next book/writing process in a post sometime if you ever feel comfortable 💗💗
