FYI… these posts will never contain any photos of what I wore to a protest. As much as I love seeing all your protest fits, I would advise you not to share photos of yourself at a protest, and to take all other possible precautions against surveillance and tracking, too: turn off wifi, Bluetooth, and location tracking when you’re out there! Thank you to everyone who has been out in the streets advocating for something bigger than themselves, especially my Los Angeles people. <3<3<3
I haven’t done a ‘what I wore’ since my week in San Francisco, and I’m leaving out a solid three weeks that I spent in Florida. Outfit-wise, this most recent stint in Florida was not a shining moment. Some days were so hot I left the house only to work out. I packed at once too much and too little—there was no cohesion to what I brought, and I felt that some of the pieces I packed didn’t go with anything else I had with me.
Upon my return, I was so excited to have access to my full wardrobe again, which is why it’s funny that so much of this week was repeats. I’m not usually a proponent of capsule wardrobes (too much of a maximalist for that!), but I’m thinking about this week as a template for a loose summer ‘capsule’. I kept myself to three different bottoms, a couple pairs of shoes, and t-shirts, ruling out an entire section of my closet (any shirt that was hanging up). It didn’t take long to pull these outfits together, and I was able to introduce variety with accessories: hats, bags, jackets. A good way to ease back in to full closet access!
I try to provide a secondhand option for every piece of clothing in these posts, whether it’s the exact item or an approximation. You can assume anything I link to is secondhand unless otherwise stated!
I had a large block of free time in the middle of the day—and have been greatly missing my cultural institutions after a month away—so I visited the New York Historical Society for the Real Clothes, Real Lives exhibit. Wearing a vintage chore coat (very similar option here) from my trip to San Francisco, Japanese Breakfast t-shirt (similar here), Who? Weekly baseball cap, Tibi Sid jeans (rented)*, and Adidas Taekwondo Mei shoes (exact ones here) with laces I replaced.
*I found several secondhand pairs of these jeans: here in M for $220 on the RealReal, here in XS for $168, and here in S for $257 (this style only comes in numerical sizing and I cannot believe in the year 2025 the RealReal is still listing denim this way!!!). Here’s a 26 on Poshmark listed for $325 and here’s a 25 for $390—I would definitely offer lower than that!
Day of work and all the other errands that come along with getting settled after some time away. I unpaused all my library requests a few days before I got back, so I had a big stack waiting for me! Just finished Binnie Kirshenbaum’s newest book, Counting Backwards… a doozy but also sharp and funny—was getting Joan Silber vibes. I’m wearing a different Who? Weekly baseball cap, Eric Javits tote via eBay (exact one here), Madewell poplin skirt (exact one here in an XL but I’d ask for photos of the actual skirt before bidding!), and repeats from the day before.
Another day of work, cleaning apartment, and reading. Wearing Ruth Asawa t-shirt from SFMoMA (no Ruth Asawa merch to be found secondhand!), thrifted baseball cap (similar here), and repeats. Even though I just got all of those library books, I also went to Greenlight and bought Empire of AI —wanted to own it so that I could lend it to other people and make them talk to me about it. Who wants to doom spiral with me?
More work and a long walk with the dog… he hates the heat just as much as I do! I’m definitely enjoying having a long skirt for the summer. Wearing a thrifted Vegas t-shirt (similar here) that I’ve had for ages, Melissa kick off sandals in gold (here in a 9), and repeats from earlier in the week.
More work, then a couple hours at the Center for Fiction to do some admin and writing. Wearing all repeats from earlier in the week and the Tibi Sid jeans in indigo (rented). They’re on eBay here in a 27, but I would not spend a lot on these if I were buying a pair—they’re 7% elastane, and I don’t think they’ll hold up as well as 100% cotton does.
Wearing a vintage Florida t-shirt (similar here), J. Crew rope tote bag (here in off white), and Verbenas sandals (exact ones here in a 36) I forgot I had. They are very comfortable but I will warn you, the white scuffs easily! Another workday, another empty block of time in the middle, which I used to make a huge pasta salad. My brain breaks trying to cook in the summer because I don’t want to eat anything hot—what are your go-to summer recipes?
Some June gloom! I was happy to tolerate the light rain in exchange for one last shot at leather weather. Wore this to vote early (fingers crossed for no Cuomo!), had a perfect lunch at Gueros on the walk back home, then saw Friendship at BAM that evening. Wearing a Jenny Lewis baseball cap from her merch stand several years ago, New Yorker tote, Uniqlo linen t-shirt (exact one here in XS), thrifted leather blazer (very similar option here), and repeats.
If you don't mind turning on the oven, my go to summer desserts are the Strawberry Spoon Cake and Plum Torte (both recipes on NYT)
I don’t often wear t-shirts but you might have inspired me to go through my collection. Mostly vintage Neil Young 🕳️
