As I assembled the outfits for this post, I noticed that almost all have at least one shade of blue in them. Adding a ‘pop of red’ has been popular advice for the last couple of years, but cobalt blue makes just as much of an impact without being as loud… does that make sense? Paired with darker denim, cobalt blue can add a monochromatic finish to an outfit, but it looks great with a lot of other colors, too: burgundy, pale blue, olive green, lavender, white. I am (obviously) not afraid of color, but if you are someone who has trouble branching out from neutrals, cobalt blue might be the easiest bold color to start with!
I try to provide a secondhand option for every piece of clothing in these posts, whether it’s the exact item or an approximation. You can assume anything I link to is secondhand unless otherwise stated!
Met up with my friend Haley for dinner at Cozy Royale. Ordered salmon, as I do pretty much any time salmon is on the menu, because I hate cooking it at home and smelling salmon for the next forty-eight hours! Wearing Agolde jeans via the RealReal (exact ones here), Etro button-up via the RealReal (can’t find another one secondhand but might I suggest this post for inspiration?), Melissa shoes (exact ones here), and rented Sandro bag (similar here).
This was one of the first days after our second heatwave broke—I was desperate to wear shoes that required socks again. Wearing my ta-da baseball cap (gotta see the show to get one!), the pink Deiji Studios button-up (similar button-up here), Tibi jeans I bought via RTR (exact ones here and here), vintage chore coat (similar here), and Nike Blazers (so many here).
Work and errands—nothing special! Wearing the Tibi jeans again, as well as a t-shirt from SF MoMA (different vintage SF MoMA shirt here) from my visit in May, a Tibi shirt via the RealReal (exact one here) around my waist, Mondo Mondo necklace originally via Poshmark I think (here with clear stone instead of red), and Birkenstocks via Depop (same ones here).
Met up with the friend who inspired this post for dinner! Wearing The Met tank top (cannot find anywhere secondhand), the weird Adidas (exact ones here), Agolde jeans bought via Nuuly (exact ones here), and the Tibi shirt and Sandro bag again. I added that Mondo Mondo heart necklace after taking this photo, then had this experience while waiting for the train…

Wore this to get my hair cut! Wearing the Agolde jeans and Adidas again, but also a couple deep cuts: this very old COS top in a nice heavyweight cotton that is actually the top half of a dress with a skirt that fully zips off (same one here), and an old leather backpack (similar here).
I found the confirmation email for the COS dress—I bought it on October 7, 2014, for $63. It feels a bit tight on my arms now, and I’m tempted to find it secondhand and order it in a size or two larger, but I don’t remember wearing it that often when it was hanging in my closet! The backpack was from a small leather goods stand at a market in South Africa, also in 2014. I put it away a few years ago after the zipper started giving me trouble—turns out that just sitting in a closet without any attention or repairs does not automatically fix that issue!
Park walk with the dog during a stretch of particularly gorgeous weather! Wearing an old Akris Punto shirt via the RealReal (exact one here), Madewell belt (exact one here), and repeats from earlier.
My favorite living writer was doing an event at the Brooklyn Public Library for her new book—and in conversation with one of my friends! I read her work for the first time in 2004, and my mom managed to get me a signed copy of that book through a bookseller connection in Canada, but I’d never seen her read in person until this event. I got to show her that signed page from twenty years ago—and get my other copy of that same book signed! Wearing black linen t-shirt from Uniqlo (exact one here), white Agolde jeans via the RealReal (exact ones here and here), and repeats. Went out after with my friend for the perfect dinner at No. 7.
Saw Rilo Kiley as a group for the first time since 2007! (Jenny Lewis was magnetic as usual.) It was hotter than I expected out, and I ended up struggling a bit with what to wear. The outfit I went with was fine but I wish I’d been able to do something that felt like more of an homage to Jenny Lewis’s style sensibility! Wore a black J. Crew skirt (same one here in white), vintage t-shirt (similar here), Melissa sandals and Mondo Mondo necklace again, and an old nylon bag from a small brand that only seems to be making jewelry now (Mimot Studio). This is what the bag looks like—I own it in a couple colors. It was perfect for holding the merch purchases that my friend and I made before the show.
Went to a venue in the Lower East Side to see my cousin (once-removed? I think?) perform in a show she wrote and directed. She runs in what I believe is a very cool Gen Z Bushwick theater scene and I was intimidated trying to figure out what to wear. I ended up going with a t-shirt from a Norwegian pizza and wine bar (cool), baggy white Agolde jeans again (cool), the Madewell belt and Melissa sandals again, and my “NOT A PSYCHO” baseball cap (merch from a Jenny Lewis show several years ago… I think cool?). I found out later that my cousin had asked the person working the door to hand out Santa hats (part of the show… don’t ask) to people with “good vibes” and I got one… so I would say the outfit worked!

I never thought about cobalt blue as an accent color—I love that so much and it's having me rethink accessories (and re-inspire to finish a bold blue scarf I started knitting). Thanks for sharing that Madewell belt, too! It's exactly what I've been looking for.
Miriam Toews and Jenny Lewis in the same week?! 😍
