A few weeks ago, one of my clients said something about friendship that struck me. I don’t want to misquote her (and I also don’t want to quote her directly) but the gist was that she used to do new things and form new memories with her friends; now her friendships felt as though they just consisted of ‘catching up’. That idea lodged itself in my brain, and I resolved to be better about actually doing things (not in the Outdoor Voices sense) with my friends that live here and reaching out more often to the ones who don’t. A lot of the outfits in this post were worn with that intention in mind—not just catching up, but spending real time together. Getting dressed feels like part of that commitment. (And the rest of these outfits are from my normal routine of frantically trying to enjoy everything I see and hear about, even if I’m doing it alone!)
I try to provide a secondhand option for every piece of clothing in these posts, whether it’s the exact item or an approximation. You can assume anything I link to is secondhand unless otherwise stated!
Went to an event that
was hosting at her beautiful home! Wearing Nena Hansen bungee shirt (can’t find any secondhand, but they’re already upcycled), Agolde jeans (many pairs here), Mondo Mondo pendant (here in clear crystal), Melissa sandals in black (exact ones here), Who? Weekly baseball cap, and an old tote bag from the Whitney.Running errands in Soho on a Saturday. (Report from the streets: white maxi skirts and silver and navy low-top sneakers are very popular right now!) Wearing Eric Javits tote via Poshmark (exact one here), rented Modern Citizen top1 (similar vibe here), and the Agolde jeans and baseball cap again.
Sunday dinner downstairs with the neighbors! Last month, we tried these popsicles (the original melon flavor) for the first time—highly recommend. Brought the ube and coconut flavors this time: melon still reigns supreme, coconut is okay, and ube was… not our favorite. Have loved other ube-flavored items in the past, but it was not doing it for me in popsicle form! Wearing Queens County Farm baseball cap (can’t get one of these online, but highly recommend a visit to the Queens County Farm Museum store), Birkenstocks via Depop (same color here), J. Crew skirt (exact one here in XS), Biketoberfest t-shirt (similar here). The silhouette of this long t-shirt paired with a skirt made me feel like Rachel of
—it reminded me of how she wears those Balenciaga men’s t-shirts she loves. (Hi Rachel!)Work and coffee with a friend! It was very hot on this day! Wearing J. Crew skirt (exact one here in a medium and here in a small), Uniqlo bag (so many here, but they’re all priced higher than just buying it new, which is annoying), Urban Outfitters eyelet camp shirt (similar here), Melissa sandals and Who? Weekly baseball cap again.
Wore this for the drive to New Jersey—always like to give my in-laws a fun new graphic t-shirt to ask about! Wearing my newly cropped vintage Don Garlits t-shirt (similar here)—the rest of the outfit is repeats from earlier in the week.
Here I am about to go to a medical school graduation party. Wearing a vintage GAP denim shirt (similar here), black By Malene Birger tank top (exact one here), and the Mondo Mondo pendant, J. Crew skirt, and Melissa sandals again. I like the shirt-around-the-neck look on other people, but was not wild about it on me—maybe with a different outfit?
All repeats! Day of thrifting, shopping, and eating in Manhattan with Emily and Sky.

Went shopping with Lily! Bought an obscenely overpriced iced matcha, as is customary upon stepping foot into Williamsburg, then went to Levi’s to get some jeans for Lily. Finished the afternoon at Amarcord Vintage and Stella Dallas 10 Ft Single. Wore my newly cropped Typhoon Lagoon t-shirt (exact one here), GAP barrel jeans (exact ones here), beaded bracelet that my friend Carley gave me when she asked me to be a bridesmaid, a vintage Swatch (exact one here), a Cath Kidston oilcloth bag (similar one here), and Melissa sandals again.
deep dive 05: Swatch
If you came of age in the 1990s and early 2000s, you had no shortage of items with which to adorn your wrists. The omnipresent slap bracelet, applied in one violent, decisive motion. The meaningless stacks of jelly bracelets, confiscated by concerned parents fooled by a
Wore this downstairs to the neighbors’ backyard for Sunday dinner. We tried another flavor of Melona—mango! (Melon is still at the top of my list.) I’m wearing a By Malene Birger tank top (similar here), a Pisces pendant that used to belong to my grandmother (similar here), and repeats from earlier in the week.
Went to Josh Sharp’s one-man show, ta-da!, which I really enjoyed. I sat in the last row of the balcony (also where I sat for Oh, Mary!) and it was a great place to sit as someone who never wants to be involved in crowd work. I went alone and would also recommend doing that—I’ve gone to the movies alone many times, but I don’t know that I’ve ever gone solo to a play or comedy show. (Also, yes, there was merch, and yes, I got something.) Wore a new Deiji Studios Weird Shirt (can’t find similar secondhand, but Weird Shirt post with many options is imminent!), Needles cargo pants (exact ones here), and Melissa shoes again.
I feel like this shirt looks kind of weird in real life but it looks good in photos!
I heartily agree with Doing Things with people vs. catching up! A great bunch of outfits, Eleanor! 💕
I need to try the coco pop! I am on a coconut popsicle tour trying to find one that I like better than Coco Paleta. So far, nothing! Can't believe that jacket lining!!
