My previous post was a chronicle of a failure to prepare. Thankfully, packing for the rest of that trip ended up being a more successful endeavor! I used Stylebook to create my packing list, as I do for all of my trips. While I sometimes find it difficult to pack for only a couple days, it was helpful to have the constraint and comfort of relatively consistent weather (none of those impossible low-of-43 high-of-70 NYC spring days in Austin!)
This is what I ended up bringing:
And this is what I ended up wearing:
Here’s the breakdown:
Occasion: Flight. Lol. Some context clues here that should allow you to recognize that.
Details: Uniqlo down layering jacket, many colors and sizes on Poshmark; Wrangler denim jacket, secondhand here; RTR x Ashley Park pants, similar here; Madewell striped t-shirt, secondhand in different color here; shimmer mask, Shop Vida.
Notes: 6am flights are not for the weak! I always think it won’t be a big deal… and then when my alarm goes off at 3:45 AM I deeply regret it. Not wild about the way this puffer looks under the denim jacket but it’s a helpful layer when flying between different climates. I took it off as soon as we landed.
I didn’t expect my hotel room to be ready yet, so I dressed for the flight as though I wouldn’t be able to change until the afternoon. I was able to check in early but I didn’t want to risk getting everything I’d packed sweaty so I stuck with the original plan, shedding the denim jacket and the Uniqlo puffer and adding a baseball cap (similar here) and a tote bag (J. Crew, many secondhand here or exact one secondhand here) as well as a Madewell cotton scarf (similar here) tied on for decoration.
has been posting about bag charms and ‘stylishly chaotic bags’ recently, and I was absolutely inspired to throw a couple scarves in my suitcase because of that! I took full advantage of the relative lack of humidity and walked all over for most of the day, stopping for an iced coffee and a visit to BookPeople—gotta find the indie bookstore wherever I go! (If you’re curious, I ended up leaving with Novelista by Claire Askew, Refuse to Be Done by Matt Bell, and My Soul Looks Back by Jessica B. Harris.)Occasion: Solo dinner
Details: Velvet vest, similar here; rented Missoma necklace, secondhand here; rented Apiece Apart pants, secondhand here; Melissa sandals, secondhand here.
Notes: I asked the woman at the front desk of the hotel for a relatively quiet bar where I could read and people-watch (food was a secondary concern here, as I did so much snacking while walking around) and she delivered. Sat unbothered at the bar for a couple hours, finished a book (Loved and Missed by Susie Boyt), and listened to a very dramatic argument just a couple stools down!
Occasion: Post-wedding walk and dinner
Details: Baseball cap again; COS cropped trench, similar here and here; Apiece Apart pants again; Met tank top, similar silhouette here; J. Crew bag again; vintage silk scarf from the free table at the quilt guild meeting, similar here; Melissa sandals again.
Notes: The wedding was early in the day, so I made it back to the hotel in time for a late dinner. Picked up something to go down the street and ate it sitting on the hotel bed—the poor man’s room service. Searched unsuccessfully for an eclipse souvenir shirt, but no luck!
Occasion: Flight home!
Details: Wrangler jacket again; Ashley Park x RTR pants again; Nike Blazers again; Uniqlo flannel shirt, exact one secondhand here; Angel Olsen / Sharon van Etten shirt (difficult to find secondhand, looks like a lot of scammy eBay listings out there, but I like to buy these shirts direct from the artist if possible anyway.
Notes: These were my last two clean shirts! I was proud of myself for using most of what I brought—a close call with an iced coffee as I waited for my flight did make me wonder what I would have done had I rendered my last clean garments unwearable, but I guess the worst case scenario would have been arriving home in a souvenir shirt from the Austin airport.
