Writing to you from my air-conditioned cave on another scorcher of a day. Here’s a week of summer outfits with no shorts in sight!
DAY ONE: Worked from home in the morning then went into the city for a doctor’s appointment. Whenever I have an appointment in that neighborhood, I like to treat myself to a soft serve from Matchaful… don’t knock it til you try it. I’m wearing a rented black lace Farm Rio top* (similar here), rented Agolde jeans* (exact style secondhand here), my new Florida Lottery baseball cap (same one here), and fisherman sandals from Asos several years ago (similar here). One of our neighbor friends wears a teal baseball cap almost every day, and now I feel like we’re in an exclusive club.
*These two items were rented via Nuuly… I received a code for three free months from someone who has absolutely no idea I have a fashion Substack! Full Nuuly report to come after the three months are up
DAY TWO: Went to a wedding held in the banquet room of a restaurant in Chinatown! I’m wearing a rented dress (secondhand here, but in fuschia and sans sleeves, a version I don’t like nearly as much) by a brand called Orire—I’d been dying to try this one out and I’m glad I had an appropriate occasion. Also wearing Maryam Nassir Zadeh patent leather sandals (same ones here for $63?!), thrifted straw bag (similar here) with Madewell silk scarf (similar here), and my grandmother’s open collar necklace (similar here). My sister said I reminded her of one of our mom’s old Barbies, and you know what? She’s right. This dress fit me well but it was sweaty. I wouldn’t wear it again, at least maybe not in the summer. Would be a great New Year’s Eve wedding guest dress though!
DAY THREE: One of the advantages of working from home is the ability to wear a sheer top and still appear professional over Zoom. After my sessions were done for the day, I was intercepted on my way to the library by neighbor friends in the playground across the street (they have kids, don’t worry!) Hung out at the playground for a couple hours and still made it to the library. (That 8pm closing time will be a relic of the past if Eric Adams has his way, though…if you live in NYC please fill this out and tell this clown to leave our libraries alone!) *steps off soapbox* I’m wearing the rented Farm Rio shirt, my Melissa sandals (black glittery pair secondhand here), a braided leather belt via Poshmark (similar here), and the rented Apiece Apart pants, which I ended up purchasing this month for $101.50. I found several pairs of them on the RealReal in different colors—off-white in a 10 and a 16, and a gorgeous dusty pink in a 0 and a 16. Here’s a black pair in a size 2 on Poshmark. I also wore this outfit later in the week with my black leather braided belt, but I think I might prefer it with the brown?
DAY FOUR: A longtime friend who lives in California and her husband are renting an apartment for a couple months that’s just a ten-minute walk away from my place. It’s lovely to have your friends nearby! Went over there for some delicious cheese and Turkish take-out. I’m wearing the straw bag with a Madewell cotton scarf (similar here), a rented Marissa Webb top (exact one secondhand here), Needles cargo pants (secondhand here), and Holzweiler blue suede sandals (similar vibe here in heels, and a very intriguing alternative in navy here). I’m also trying out some jewelry layering—after several weeks of deliberation, I bought a Roxanne Assoulin beaded necklace from the RealReal (similar option here) and have been wearing it most days since! I’m wearing it here with my pearl pendant (similar here).
DAY FIVE: Work and another library run! I’ve been checking my holds daily and strategically requesting backlist and newer titles at the same time so I don’t run out. Two recent books I enjoyed: Bad Animals by Sarah Braunstein and Negative Space by Gillian Linden. I’m wearing a Rhode cotton top via the RealReal (many sizes and colors—though none in this green—on the RealReal right now), the rented Agolde jeans, and both necklaces again. Couldn’t be bothered to wear shoes that needed fastening so I went with my olive green Birks (secondhand here).
DAY SIX: Wearing the Apiece Apart linen pants, Holzweiler sandals, both necklaces, and a rented Sea New York top (secondhand here). I’m sweating already in this picture but you can’t tell! Printed tops for the win.
DAY SEVEN: Went to see Camera Obscura at Webster Hall! Wearing the Sandy Liang eyelet shirt (same one here on the RealReal, if you add to wishlist you’ll get an email if someone re-consigns it), braided leather belt, Apiece Apart pants, both necklaces, and Melissa sandals. I almost wore a fitted white tank top but abandoned that plan after sweating through it during my quick walk with the dog before I left. This was the perfect concert shirt—not only is it eyelet (tiny holes!), it also has no armpits (hard to describe, see product shot below for a better explanation).
DAY EIGHT: It was so hot. My sister was visiting, and we had lunch at Talea and walked around Cobble Hill until it was unbearable. I’m wearing a rented navy Labo.Art dress (similar here and here), the necklace combo, the new Eric Javits tote via Poshmark (exact one here, many more on Poshmark) with a cotton Madewell scarf and the Melissa sandals.

It was the greatest treat in the world when my mom let my sister and I play with her old barbies that looked just like the one in your post! Your wedding outfit is so so chic!
What was the venue in Chinatown? I’m looking to host a Chinese banquet!
